2013 SHENANGO VALLEY MODIFIED SOFTBALL LEAGUE PLAYOFF RECAPS
 
The Shenango Valley Modified Softball League used a double-elimination tournament to determine its championship series participants. All six teams competed in the tournament. Third-seeded Our Gang's won the winner's bracket and will face No. 2 seed Jolley Industrial Supply in the best-of-five championship series, starting Sunday evening. Our Gang's will be the home team for Games 1, 3 and 5 as winner's bracket champion. Jolley Industrial is home for Games 2 and 4.
 
Here are recaps are of the first nine games of the playoffs.
 
GAME A -- No. 5 Sharon VFW 23, No. 4 West Side Beverage 11

Sharon VFW collected seven extra-base hits in winning its playoff opener. Bruce Lindsey paced VFW with a home run and single while Josh Chisholm tripled and doubled. Todd Rearick and Mike Porterfield each doubled and singled while John Anderson and Mike Rice each laced doubles.

Joe Tissler cracked three singles and Denny Yale singled twice for VFW. Bob Young threw a complete game to earn the pitching victory.

Gary Hinkson homered and doubled to help lead West Side Beverage. Ben Davis doubled and singled while Aaron DeSantis collected three hits. Jason Tomko singled twice. Jonathan Tomko started and took the setback for West Side. Brian Hruska pitched in relief.

GAME B -- No. 3 Our Gang's 19, No. 6 Chiccarino's 7

Our Gang's broke open a 9-6 game by scoring eight runs in the bottom of the fifth in each team's postseason opener. Geno Rossi tripled twice and also doubled to help pace Our Gang's while Clint Ansell, Mike Cidila and Matt DeSalvo all doubled twice. Bryan Bailey, Nate Banick and Poog Williams each doubled. Chuck Joseph pitched six innings to record the victory for Our Gang's.

Wally Carpenter led Chiccarino's by going 3 for 3 with a double. Tony Merolillo and Justin Stefanowicz both doubled while Ryan Briggs went 2 for 3. Briggs took the pitching loss.

GAME C -- No. 1 High Street 16, No. 5 Sharon VFW 4

After receiving a quarterfinal-round bye, High Street opened the postseason by pulling away from upset-minded Sharon VFW. High Street led 8-4 in the fourth before breaking open the game with an eight-run outburst.

Kyle Rupp homered and tripled for High Street while Shawn Valenly tripled and singled. Dustin Kulka doubled twice and also singled. Fred Sloan doubled and Corey Sternthal singled twice. Devin Kulka picked up the pitching win.

Eric King homered for Sharon VFW and Anderson singled twice. Rice took the pitching defeat.

GAME D -- No. 3 Our Gang's 11, No. 2 Jolley Industrial Supply 5

Our Gang's moved to the winner's bracket final by downing Jolley Industrial, which had received a quarterfinal bye. Williams homered for Our Gang's while Banick tripled and added two doubles. Rossi tripled, doubled and singled. Bailey and Cidila both doubled and Steve Feigert singled twice.

Bailey threw a complete game to earn the victory in the pitcher's circle.

Tyler Allen and Willie Pletcher both doubled and singled for Jolley Industrial Supply. Jeff Hofius and Sean Murray each doubled and Zack Kizak singled twice. Tim Murray pitched and took the defeat.

GAME E -- No. 2 Jolley Industrial Supply 15, No. 4 West Side Beverage 3

Jolley Industrial rebounded from its opening setback to oust West Side Beverage in an elimination game. Jon Murray homered as part of a three-hit night for Jolley Industrial Supply while Allen homered and singled. Justin Songer tripled and singled while Kizak and Cameron Konop both had two singles. Tim Murray earned the pitching victory.

Matt Kornbau and A.J. Staul both doubled for West Side Beverage. Jonathan Tomko started and took the setback. Hruska pitched in relief.

GAME F -- No. 6 Chiccarino's 17, No. 5 Sharon VFW 13 (8 innings)

In a game that featured six ties and seven lead changes, Chiccarino's remained alive by holding off Sharon VFW in eight innings. VFW pulled into an 8-8 tie in the bottom of the seventh and had the winning run in scoring position but Stefanowicz's diving catch in center field with two outs sent the game into extra innings.

In the top of the eighth, Chiccarino's broke open the game with a nine-run outburst. Stefanowicz went 5 for 6 with a triple, double and five runs batted in while Greg Wise went 4 for 6 with a double and five runs scored. Gino Merolillo also went 4 for 6 with a triple.

Also for Chiccarino's, John Wise doubled and singled and Corey Dancak collected two hits. Briggs picked up the pitching win for Chiccarino's.

For VFW, Sim Harrison homered, doubled twice and knocked in five runs as part of a 4-for-4 effort. Yale doubled and added two singles while Rearick went 3 for 5. Lindsey also had three hits. King and Anthony Wilson each doubled while Porterfield singled twice. Young took the defeat for VFW. VFW turned four double plays defensively.

GAME G -- No. 3 Our Gang's 9, No. 1 High Street 8

Our Gang's clinched a spot in the championship series by slipping past top-seeded High Street in the winner's bracket final. Banick and Williams both homered and singled for Our Gang's while Rossi tripled twice. Bailey singled twice and also started a game-ending double play in the seventh inning. Banick picked up the pitching victory.

Valenly doubled and singled for High Street while Dustin Kulka also doubled. Rupp singled twice. Devin Kulka pitched for High Street.

GAME H -- No. 2 Jolley Industrial Supply 11, No. 6 Chiccarino's 10

Pletcher's game-winning inside-the-park home run lifted Jolley Industrial Supply to a come-from-behind win over Chiccarino's in an elimination game. Pletcher broke a 10-10 tie in the bottom of the seventh with his round-tripper, which ousted Chiccarino's from the tournament.

Chiccarino's jumped out to a 10-1 lead in the third inning before Jolley Industrial eventually forged a 10-10 tie in the fifth. Songer and Allen both homered in Jolley's five-run fourth inning while Kolten Hoffman went 3 for 3 with a triple and double. Konop and Jon Murray each added a pair of singles. Tim Murray recorded the win.

Carpenter launched a three-run homer for Chiccarino's. Phil Ciprian tripled, singled and drove in five runs while Dancak doubled as part of a three-hit outing. John Wise doubled and singled and Gino Merolillo collected two singles. Briggs took the loss.

GAME I -- No. 2 Jolley Industrial Supply 15, No. 1 High Street 13

Jolley Industrial Supply earned its second late comeback victory in as many games by scoring six runs in the top of the seventh to edge High Street in an elimination game. Songer hit a three-run homer in the top of the seventh, cutting the lead to 13-12. Hoffman's second homer of the game tied the game at 13 moments later.

Allen also homered for Jolley Industrial Supply. Devin Corini doubled and singled while Konop added two hits. Tim Murray escaped a jam in the bottom of the seventh to earn the win.

Sternthal homered twice for High Street while Dustin Kulka homered and belted two doubles. Rupp also doubled twice and finished 4 for 4. Ryan Morris doubled twice while Jonathan Smith and Valenly both had two hits apiece. Devin Kulka took the pitching defeat for High Street.

CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES

Game One -- Jolley Industrial Supply 17, Our Gang's 8

Jolley Industrial Supply jumped out to a 1-0 series lead by generating 10 extra-base hits in the opener. Devin Corini launched a home run and double while Justin Songer homered and singled. Willie Pletcher also cracked a home run while Jeff Hofius doubled as part of a four-hit night. Tyler Allen tripled and doubled while Jon Murray doubled twice and added a single. Zack Kizak doubled and singled. Tim Murray earned the pitching victory for Jolley Industrial Supply.

Mike Cidila homered and singled for Our Gang's while Matt DeSalvo tripled twice and also singled. Gio Rossi laced a triple and single while Nate Banick and Poog Williams each doubled. Steve Feigert singled twice. Bryan Bailey took the setback in the circle for Our Gang's.

Game Two -- Our Gang's 4, Jolley Industrial Supply 3 (8 innings)

DeSalvo's solo home run in the top of the eighth broke a 3-3 deadlock and tied the series 1-1. Winning pitcher Banick and Cidila also homered for Our Gang's while Rossi doubled and singled. Williamas tripled.

Corini homered for the second straight game for Jolley Industrial Supply. Tim Murray pitched eight innings but took the defeat.

Game Three -- Our Gang's 8, Jolley Industrial Supply 6

Our Gang's moved ahead in the series by pulling out Game Three. Bailey tripled, doubled and singled for Our Gang's while Cidila hit his third homer of the series. Burry and Clint Ansell also tripled whiel winning pitcher Banick doubled. Geno Rossi also doubled.

Corini belted his third round-tripper of the series and added a pair of singles. Tyler Allen, Cameron Konop and Justin Songer all doubled. Craig Songer singled twice. Tim Murray pitched for Jolley Industrial Supply.

Game Four -- Our Gang's 15, Jolley Industrial Supply 8

Our Gang's captured its third straight league title by scoring seven runs in the top of the seventh inning, breaking an 8-8 tie. Geno Rossi's three-run homer in the inning put Our Gang's ahead to stay.

David Bodien, Burry and Cidila also homered for Our Gang's, which saw an early 4-0 lead turn into a 7-4 deficit. Banick doubled twice while DeSalvo doubled as part of a three-hit outing. Ansell, Feigert and Corey Trott also doubled. Shawn Matsko roped a pinch-hit, game-tying two-run double in the sixth. Banick earned the pitching victory.

Craig Songer rapped three hits for Jolley Industrial Supply while Jon Murray and Hofius each doubled and singled. Kizak also doubled. Tim Murray threw a complete game for Jolley Industrial but absorbed the defeat.
